Odd speed test results

Saturday I put my century link modem in transparent bridge and begin using a NetGear nighthawk as my router and turned on dynamic QOS... everything's working fine but when I go to speed test places like fast.com etc. I get the expected 35-40 mbps Down and about 5 up which is what DSL report speed test was showing previously .....I haven't tested today on an ethernet cable but all my WiFi devices are showing much lower numbers on dslreports........ So I went back and cleared any speed test preferences (reset it) but still got numbers like those showing at the link below http://www.dslreports.com/speedtest/65090741

Few Question on DSL Statistics

Just wanted to inquire on if these line stats were good, just as a double check: sync rate down: 11,771 up: 892 SNR down: 21.8 up: 23.9 Attenuation down: 16.4 up: 9.0 Power down: 14.4 up: 10.5 error rate is effectively 0 and the only time it's retrained is when I disconnected and reconnected the modem. Just "how" good are these stats, and likewise, what would be the likely max sync rate (I know a techs gadget states 21/1.24 as far as syncing goes, but I know there's overhead and they likely won't sync at max rate due to shifts int he line over time/different weather/etc). Lastly, I noted that the near and far end "channel type" was "interleave". Is this the same interleave of the "interleaving" vs "faspath" notoriety? I was under the impression that Centurylink defaulted to fasthpath now for all 5 meg and greater packages...was this changed? (It would certainly explain my higher latency).

anything I can do about horrible interleave latency?

BTW I think error packets is bugged it didn't reset when I cleared stats an hour ago I have 50ms latency to first hop, probably all interleave. My latency in games is 130ms and my favorite FPS is nearly unplayable because interleave mangles UDP packet order causing players to glitch around. I setup OpenWRT with CAKE SQM so I have zero bufferbloat. My ping is rock steady even with 5 people streaming, but too high for FPS games because I must be on some crazy interleave depth. My parents called about slow internet several times (pretty sure it was just bufferbloat), which may have led CenturyLink to jack interleave all the way up. I don't know if they adjust DSLAM settings or leave them on auto, my signals are bad too lol. Is there anything that can be done about interleave? I have considered introducing some artificial traffic to take up half our upload and download bandwidth while gaming. I figure this might reduce interleave because packets will be closer together, but I have no idea how underlying protocol handles it. maybe a newer modem would help? I'm on a C1100Z which came out in 2011. Thinking maybe this bad boy from 2019 might get better signal so DSLAM would turn off my damn interleave? https://www.zyxel.com/us/en/products_services/VDSL2-17a-Bonding-and-35b-Single-Line-Bridge-VMG4005-B50B/

[CenturyTel] Price for life is a lie

My father who is 87 years old has lived in the same house since 1972 and has centurytel (now centurylink) phone and internet. He has had the phone service since 1972 DSL internet since 1995. He has been paying $29.95 a month for slow (less than 10 Mbs) DSL service. Since around 2009 CL has been sending fliers in his monthly statements that say his internet price is guaranteed for life. Last month CL raised is price for this crappy slow DSL service from $29.99 to $50.00. My father has never missed a payment and never had his service interrupted. Last month my dad was looking at his huge CL Phonebill he was paying $120.00 a month for phone and internet. Because he is on a fixed income and money is tight he decided to drop the CL phone a go with cell phone service on my family plan. As soon as he did that CL says since he made a change to his service the "price for life" is no longer in affect. In the flyers they sent him with his bill it never mentions anything about the price for life being canceled if you make changes to your service. Customer service was kinda rude to my dad and told him there is nothing they can do but told him they will send him a customer survey to fill out. I used the internet archives to look at old CL pages and found no fine print to the "price for life" until around 2017 when they started saying price for life guaranteed when bundled with home phone service. My dad got the DSL service in 1995 and since the change was made later I think this is very sleezy of CL. I am going to complain to state regulators about this this is not right.

C-Link FTTH price dropping like a rock (for me at least)

Approx. 5 years ago I noticed new cabling on the telephone wires in my immediate neighborhood, they had bright pink ribbons on them labled "Fiber." As soon as it was available, I switched from my C-link DSL internet/POTS bundle to Fiber 40Mbps/telephone bundle. ~$97/month. Since then I have experimented with simple Ooma telephone service VOIP and it is working well enough to cut the C-Link telephone service from the bundle. Up till now my inquiries for lowest price available options were always a flat $65/mo. for life 40Mbps. Last Friday my inquiry to C-Link CS offered me something new: $55/mo. 40Mbps internet only price for life but I have to call their Account Dept. to set it up. Account Dept. rep right off the bat offers 80Mbps $45/mo. incl. taxes/fees price for life. :p NOTE: I am a light user of bandwidth. 40Mbps was probably overkill for me. I was actually looking for something less than the 40Mbps floor they always offered me, as a way to economize (currently out of work), but this 80Mbp@ $45/mo is acceptable. 12 August supposed to see a service tech, maybe to unplug the RJ connector on the outside demarc panel? Otherwise not sure why the need for a truck roll. REMAINS TO BE SEEN if this will actually play out as promised, having read about C-Link broken promises (and my own billing difficulties with them). Will update as this progresses.

Horrible Experience

So I live in rural MO and the only option is CenturyLink. A couple techs we at the cabinet and said they were hooking someone up. I said my service just went out and the response was "that's weird". They proceed to go to a ped across the street then next to my house. I asked them to take a look because my service was off since they started working. They said they couldn't do anything without a ticket. I understood because I worked for an ISP and were unable to to work without a work order. I got a ticket set up and they left... I have never left a customer without service if I could help it. They are unavailable until Monday. What a joke of a company. Coming from working for Spectrum after 7 years and same day appointments to CenturyLink is insane. They don't seem to be in much hurry to do anything and I wish I could understand it ...

IPv6 having latency issues?

Hi folks, over the past week I have noticed that the IPv6 configuration (Track Interface / 6rd) has had severe latency spikes and persistent packet loss during the weekend and during evening peak hours. Tonight is no different, if not worse. I assume this might be somewhat related?

[Qwest] Upgrading from technicolor C2000T?

My gigabit fiber service has been pretty good(!), but my technicolor C2000T is a bit long in the tooth: Firefox refuses to connect to its LAN administration port via https - its TLS protocols are too old / Firefox doesn't like self-signed certificates, and there hasn't been a firmware update in a few years. I see that there a number of newer options out there - are there any clear winners? Any other advice (like "don't worry about it?")? Should I buy through Centurylink or ? According to https://www.centurylink.com/home/help/internet/modems-and-routers/newer-centurylink-modems.html the current modems are: Actiontec C3000A Greenwave C4000XG Technicolor C1100T Zyxel C1100Z Zyxel C3000Z My intuition says the C3000Z is right for me, but any advice would be welcome.

Fiber installation nightmare

Hi, I am new here. I recently moved to a new home in PDX and was looking into fiber, not for speeds, but for better consistency with my internet and seem to be stuck with CL as my only option and was wondering about others' experiences with them as a provider. TL;DR Scheduled an appointment for 8/13, Technician no showed, called to say he would be back 8/14. Showed up and looked around for 5 minutes before leaving to another job and never returning or calling. Customer support says the tech canceled my appt and has me schedule a new appt for 8/20. Has anyone else had a technician no show and cancel their appointment? Is it possible to get credit for the week(s) I have paid for service without receiving it? I have heard the best way to get actual customer service is by speaking to the retention or loyalty department. How do you get in contact with them? It has been a headache dealing with support trying to get this installed, and taking multiple days off work, all for nothing. Have you guys needed to get in contact with support after installation? I am hoping to get this installed and never have to speak with CL again. Is anyone actually going to show up on 8/20? Any other advice for someone new to dealing with the nightmare of ISP customer support? I scheduled an appointment to have a new fiber installation at my house for Thursday, 8/13. I received a voicemail from CL on the morning of 8/12 saying that the installation would be delayed and to call a number for more information. Called them early on 8/13, before 8am local time, and the phone rep said the delay was due to their automated system not seeing an installation box near my address, but that they were able to resolve the issue and that the delay on my appointment would be lifted. At 4:55pm on Thursday, the technician called me and said he wouldn't be able to make it, and he would come back on Friday 8/14, in the morning. He showed up at 2:30pm on Friday, looked around and then said he had to leave for another appointment and would be back in an hour. He never came back and never contacted me again. I contacted customer support that evening who said I would need to schedule a new appointment and the soonest availability was 8/20, despite having an appointment already scheduled for a week prior. Asked to speak with the customer loyalty department, and the rep transferred me to a phone line which said the office was closed for the day. And I have been paying for fiber since 8/10. I got in touch with their media team over FB messenger, who said they could offer me credit for the time I had been paying for service, but that I would just have to schedule the next available appointment for an install. I haven't heard from them since midday 8/14. I rescheduled for 8/20, several hours ago, with the customer support rep saying they would email me an appointment confirmation, but I have not received an email, nor does the appointment show up anywhere in my account details on the CL website. Thank you!!

It's been a while since I've checked in to see what CL is doing, but was curious as to whether or not there's been any chance in policy/news of how CL is handling residential or non-dense areas. The CEO last stated he was halting all further upgrades with regards to vectoring, but also VDSL and bonding upgrades, especially in areas with 20 meg or less---with the exception of CAF II funding. I take it this is still the direction they're going in? They were also exploring splitting off their residential/rural lines, but, last I heard, this plan has been pretty much scrapped since splitting the network will incur huge value loss to both new companies, in the long run. Oddly enough, a number of the lower speed areas have received speed upgrades here and there---those previously able to get 10 meg down only can, at some locations get 15 meg down (and if they have a business account, 20 meg down and 1.5 meg up), that said, there's been absolutely no advertising this capability; I only found out because I routinely check addresses in the area for potential speed upgrades "just in case".

Inquiry about technical requirements for Bonded DSL service

I currently have CenturyLink DSL service (10 Mbps down / 1 Mbps up) at my house and get about 7-8 Mbps down and 0.6 Mbps up. With remote schooling for the kids and remote working, we need to upgrade our connection speed. I have inquired with CenturyLink about upgrading to a Bonded DSL service. My neighbor has Bonded DSL and his speed tests put him at roughly 25-30 Mbps down. The CenturyLink Account Representative told me that requests for new Bonded DSL in our area are “frozen”. When I inquired what frozen means, he stated that no upgrades for that service are currently being scheduled. When I inquired as to why it is frozen, he was unable to provide a specific reason, but indicated it could be due to either (1) no technicians available to do the service, (2) the service is not technically available, or (3) that the service upgrade requires “in-home” work, and that is not being scheduled at this time due to Covid-19. Well I don’t know if technicians are available or not, but I believe the service is technically available since my neighbor’s telco box on the street is just 20 feet from mine. But I am wondering about what “in-home” work is required to upgrade me from a regular DSL connection to a Bonded DSL connection? I have looked at the wiring in the telco box on the street, and at the box mounted on the side of my house, and it looks to me like there is sufficient wiring in them for adding the Bonded DSL service without needing to run new copper lines. If I can find out what is needed for “in home” work (if it is actually necessary), I can probably get someone locally to take care of that for me (I am a network administrator for a small company, but I don’t do wiring work). I know that I will need to get a new modem that handles the bonded connection. Can someone give me a brief explanation of what wiring changes would be needed, up-to the house, and within the house to upgrade my service from regular DSL to Bonded DSL? Thanks. Jeff

CTL ZyXEL C1100Z Router/Modem - over-current condition on port 2??

Firmware: CZW007-4.16.012.15 "Only" on reboot of modem this "System Event" appears ONLY ONCE!!! in System Log: "hub 1-1:1.0: over-current condition on port 2" To me, this looks like USB?? But I can't find USB on hub 1, port 2 at all. Anyway, why would ZyXEL C1100Z be reporting on "over-current" condition in USB somewhere, if this is related to USB? A possible fluke or should I dig deeper?

Need help with VDSL line

I have a DSL line only, no phone service. I am signed up for 30MB download. Service was great until last week we had a lightning storm. Now I am around 6MB download. I had the tech come out and he said all was good and it was an in-house wiring issue. I try to use the test jack at the NID and I cannot get the modem (Motorola MD 1600) to synch using the DSL test jack. I am attaching a pic of the NID and the inside jack (bottom) that is connected to the modem. My biggest issue is why is the test jack not working, but the inside jack is working. I was not home when he said he tested the service at the NID, but he got 30 MB there. Can anyone help me understand what I am looking at? I don't see how he got a good result unless he moved some wires around temporarily. Possible my modem was damaged? He said he got 14 inside and 30 outside. Thank you [att=1] Bottom jack is DSL access: [att=2] Motorola MD 1600 router stats: [att=3]

Slow and speed test not working

CL speed test gives ping and jitter results but no download or upload. I went to Ookla and same problem. Here on DSLR, the https speed test gave me a "Browser could not reach ANY server" error but the http test works. I’m connected to the modem via ethernet and nothing else was connected to the network. I’m paying for 20/896 and getting 11/600. Last year, after they switched to a different pair, it was around 12. Any ideas what could be causing the speed test problem? I disabled my ad blocker. I don't have any other extensions.

Please identify cable running from RJ11 wall plug to DSL Modem

I ended up with two "Green" cables each left by CTL technician and each with RJ11 connectors. One is more substantial @ 24AWG also marked "4W" (which I assume means four wires?) but it has no mention of "CAT5e." This cable also mentions: AWM 20251 60C 150V E321220 The other (lighter) "Green" cable left by CTL is thinner @ 26AWG and is clearly marked "CAT5e" even though only 2Pairs. Mentions also E344096 AWM 2835 TIA/FIA 568B .2 UTP. The first listed above is what I'm using right now and appears nominal. Just wondering if anybody can identify the cable mentioned above not marked "CAT5e"? It must be data-grade else why would CTL leave it with me, right? Thanks.
