Question about fiber in zip 89104

I'm currently on Cox, paying FAR more than I care to for internet service. I'd checked with CenturyLink about 6 months ago and found I could get service, but only 10mbps DSL. A few days ago, a friend who lives about 3 blocks away from me told me he'd just dumped Cox for CenturyLink fiber 100/100. I went to the website, put my address in, and it STILL showed only 10mbps DSL. I tried calling and the person on the other end, who I could barely understand, said the 10mbps DSL was the best they could do at my address. WTF? I currently have 150/10 with Cox, but am paying $89/mo for this. My friend said he got the fiber 100/100 for the $49/mo "lifetime" rate. I asked the rep on the phone whether I could expect fiber coming my way any time soon. She mumbled something unintelligable and I hung up... I'm trying hard to cut my bills down as my income has taken a dump. 10mbps just does NOT cut it, speedwise.. Ideas?

"Stealth Mode" in IPV4 firewall on Zyxel C1100Z

Question: Is it possible for “Stealth Mode” option in IPV4 firewall on Zyxel C1100Z to be the cause for any reason of routine DSL signal dropping? No other issues with connectivity except that 2 to 3 times a month, I have to call into Repair and they "rebuild my connection" or some call it "rebuilding the port" blah blah. Takes 2 to 3 minutes maximum. Good to go until next time. Problem has persisted for nearly one (1) year. Only vague reference to some mysterious "ping rate" issue. Technician on telephone says: does NOT look like issue with my modem. Specs. ADSL2Plus 11.775Mbps - down / 0.892Mbps - up Est. distance to co: 4275 Ft. (Routine) SNR: 17.4dB - down / 14.0dB - up (Routine) Attenuation: 33.5 - down / 16.1 - up Not unusual to read something around "12676" Unavailable Seconds Also "retrains" are mentioned routinely. CRC errors usually very low or none mentioned at all. ---- Edit: Goes without saying, I suppose, that in Stealth Mode...ping to local DSL modem (to modem IP address) = no response. CenturyLink DSL in southcentral Missouri. - Thanks for any insight.

Excited after 3 years of delays.. My fiber box is getting installed. Likely won't be ready till fall since no fiber has been stranded in the poles. But very exciting. Clearfield fsai. Much nicer than corning. you can see the conduits by the pole ready to feed the fiber aerial. :)

[CenturyTel] CenturyLink Actiontec C3000A for $26.40 (Delivered)

I've watched eBay for longer than a year, hunting for a suitable CenturyLink Actiontec C3000A backup/replacement. Last week, I ran across a smoking deal, took a chance, and jumped on it. It was advertised as "For parts or not working." It arrived, this afternoon - no cables, no power supply, no nothing - just the bare unit. I figured, for $26.40, if it was "not working" I'd keep it around "for parts." I took it out of the shipping box and hooked it up to a spare Netgear power supply, that was laying around. Boom! It fired up. So far, so good. Next, I saved a copy of my (working) C3000A's config file to a USB stick, and used it to restore/clone the (working) config file to my (eBay) C3000A. Finally, I powered down my LAN, switched out the C3000A boxes, and powered up. Boom! The backup/replacement is performing perfectly. I'll attach a couple of snaps to this post; one showing the initial power-up test, and the other showing the eBay C3000A replacing my original C3000A. Matter of fact, I'm using the "For parts or not working" modem/router, as I type :)

In 1982 GTE installed underground wiring in our rural area. Fast forward to 2020 and we have a need to get phone service to our rural location. Our nearest neighbor is 3/4 of a mile away. They have service. We still have splice pedestals buried in the forest coming down our road. But they haven't been touched since probably 1982. CenturyLink will be here Tuesday. Do they still lay down new line if the old infrastructure is shot?

Have had CL Since 2011, had allot of the same issues when we first moved into this house, but CL got their act together after about 2 years of pain and it has been OK, until I called CL to change my bundle, they offered higher speeds for Internet, I told them I have heard this before, and the techs out in my area come to my door telling me I am too far and the sales people just keep pushing speeds they cannot offer, well I went against my better judgement and listen to CenturyLink and said OK, then let's do it, upgrade me! The upgrade was to happen on May 18th 2020, well the tech showed up at my door and told me what I already knew was correct. But now since the upgrade order, I have not had stable internet, High ping times 1000ms+ and 25% packet loss, and days and days and tech after tech coming out to say they can lower my speed, but this is not helping the issue, it's almost like they have no professional training at all. They do not even understand the simple networking basic's of ping times, packet drops and etc.. I have been calling and waiting on the phone everyday now to get them to fix it correctly. They have sent 4 tech's out so far and all they can say is OK, I just have to run to the box down the street and you should be all good. and then I am stuck Call and WAITING (Over 3 hours on one call, even talked to a manager and then he said he would be right back and then I pushed to basic first called operator to explain and give all my account details all over again. They are telling me that they see an order for the upgrade that needs to be canceled out and it should happen at 5:00 PM tonight (June 3rd 2020) and my internet will work again. Yea right! I will be stuck calling Centurylink again to open a 5th ticket. All I can say is if you have any other options then Centruylink, Please choose the other option or you will be sorry if you choose Centruylink. With the way this has all went down Centurylink doesn't have anything to be proud of. Service, Customer Service, Sales and Support SUCK!

Got DSL installed today, tech said the line looked good, we are about 1.3 miles from CO. They provisioned us at 3MB. However, his tools said we could max out around 13.xxMB. Who/how do I go about getting Centurylink to bump us up to 6MB or even 10MB?

New install question

I just placed an order for 940/940 fiber with CL and have a few questions. We live in an 8 unit apartment complex that all have our own addresses. The website said I was good to go, but I am worried they will want to install an exterior ONT. We have no external power outlets. Has anyone in a multi unit had luck getting them to install a single interior ONT? Our units are pretty old I would guess from the 50's-60's and all the other units have cable so I would be the only one using fiber for now. Really hope they can install so I can get away from the data cap my family has been fighting for the last few months. Thanks everyone.

Need help with VDSL line

I have a DSL line only, no phone service. I am signed up for 30MB download. Service was great until last week we had a lightning storm. Now I am around 6MB download. I had the tech come out and he said all was good and it was an in-house wiring issue. I try to use the test jack at the NID and I cannot get the modem (Motorola MD 1600) to synch using the DSL test jack. I am attaching a pic of the NID and the inside jack (bottom) that is connected to the modem. My biggest issue is why is the test jack not working, but the inside jack is working. I was not home when he said he tested the service at the NID, but he got 30 MB there. Can anyone help me understand what I am looking at? I don't see how he got a good result unless he moved some wires around temporarily. Possible my modem was damaged? He said he got 14 inside and 30 outside. Thank you [att=1] Bottom jack is DSL access: [att=2] Motorola MD 1600 router stats: [att=3]

It's been a while since I've checked in to see what CL is doing, but was curious as to whether or not there's been any chance in policy/news of how CL is handling residential or non-dense areas. The CEO last stated he was halting all further upgrades with regards to vectoring, but also VDSL and bonding upgrades, especially in areas with 20 meg or less---with the exception of CAF II funding. I take it this is still the direction they're going in? They were also exploring splitting off their residential/rural lines, but, last I heard, this plan has been pretty much scrapped since splitting the network will incur huge value loss to both new companies, in the long run. Oddly enough, a number of the lower speed areas have received speed upgrades here and there---those previously able to get 10 meg down only can, at some locations get 15 meg down (and if they have a business account, 20 meg down and 1.5 meg up), that said, there's been absolutely no advertising this capability; I only found out because I routinely check addresses in the area for potential speed upgrades "just in case".

We've had CenturyLink internet since we moved in, over 10 years ago. Our plan has not changed. To this day, we pay just under $100 a month for less than 1Mbps internet. It's the only cable internet option in my area, at all. The only other internet provider is HughesNet, and I have a connection with them, but it goes out when it rains as it's satellite internet, and it rains all the time here, and I'm a full time online student. Is there any way to increase the amount of the connection that is offered to my address? Or, if not, to discount my bill, so I'm not massively overpaying for internet that barely counts as functional?

Question on speed testing a bonded DSL line

I recently upgraded my CenturyLink DSL speed to 140 Mbps. So far though, all speed test show me getting a lot less. A CenturyLink tech support told me that this is not unusual. Supposedly, any speed test done will only test one of the two bonded connections, thereby only giving half the speed. Just wanted to check with the experts here if this was true.

[CenturyTel] MDU Fiber gear

A friend in Stapleton area of Denver is moving into an apartment & getting the "1 Gig" service. Suites are wired with Suttle cabinet in the closet and 8-10 jacks in the suite. But the ONT's are all out in the floor's telco closet, and there's but one CAT5 from the hall to the suite. So if a subscriber orders data+phone, they must put a router/switch/ATA in the closet, one fed with CAT5+. Has anyone seen such gear?

Peering Issues?

Currently on 60/5mbps, speed tests are fine (61/5.6mbps on speed test), modem stats are fine, etc. Most websites are fine, but certain ones like imgur, and reddit images are taking an insanely long time to load. I remember someone telling me a while back that this is some sort of a peering issue on CL's end? Is there something on my end I can look into?

Centurylink Bureaucracy Nonsense: Speeds, Line Length and stats

$

Well, I think I've finally lost pretty much all faith in Centurylink as a provider after what transpired, recently. I have a 10 meg connection connection in a rural area, but have a very stable line with very low attenuation. Periodically I check the my and my neighbor's addresses in case better speeds become available, but they're not advertised (especially since CL's CEO has stated that all further advertising in 20 meg areas is now fully stopped). To my surprise, most of my neighbors are listed at having access to 15 meg, but I'm still on 10. After fighting with CL for about 2.5 hours on the phone, I was finally able to get them to send a tech out to just test to see if my line had good enough stats to support the 15 meg and escalate it through their system. Roll round to the tech visiting. The tech visited and tested my line thoroughly; things were stable and the max line potential, even at my distance was 21 meg down and 1.24 meg up. The good news ends there. Naturally I didn't expect 20/1 due to having to overprovision, but he informed me they only go by hard set packages now--CL "simplified" their offers and are not willing to go with "in between" speeds anymore---so the nearest speed would be 15/1. That said, he then informed me that this was out of the question as well, because about a year ago, it became official policy to disregard line stats or anything else and go **PURELY** by the physical length of the copper from their equipment to the telephone box on the side of the road. This has resulted in problems for towns in my area, I was informed--some towns were previously had resident on 8 meg, but if any newcomers come in, even if they're decently close, they can only get 3---furthermore, others who even make a change to their account get dumped onto 3---and there's no way to get them back up to 8 because "it's not in the system anymore". He clarified this was not a bandwidth exhaustion issue, necessarily, but due to going by new internal recommendations and policies that *ONLY* goes by physical line length. He further went on to describe another customer who requested 30 meg (as it was listed as having access to that on their website)--when he came to do the install and activation, it would only allow him to activate 3 meg; when he called up, he got told that the customer's line length was listed as being too long, ergo he wouldn't be able to get 30. This customer in particular? The teleco equipment was on the edge of the guys' property and the tech's own handheld line modem gave a reading of less than 1500' for total line length---but the office wouldn't budge and they couldn't work around it because that's what the system has---so the guy who was sitting right on top of the remote terminal got stuck with 3 meg, at the end of the day. Further compounding this problem, he pointed out, was that they only measure physical line length from their equipment to the box and not the customer interface device---so even if you have a 1/3 of a mile long drive way (like my neighbor does) and the *actual* line length from the DSLAM to the neighbor's box to the to the neighbor's CID is longer than the line from the DSLAM to my box to my CID---it doesn't matter because his box is closer, he gets access to greater speeds despite an objectively longer line. He then lastly explained that the process of escalating evaluation has gotten more complicated; he has to test the line, file a report, it goes to someone at his local branch who has to review+stamp it, then it gets passed to his boss who has to review+stamp it, then it finally gets passed to a line engineer who has to review and stamp it---where upon he'll come out and measure the line-----but not the line stats, he'll still *ONLY* measure the phsyical length of the line from the DSLAM to the box, then report it to the database. He said they don't listen to techs at all anymore no matter what their line modems say; they PURELY go by distance now and if you're past the point, it doesn't matter; it's basically impossible to get on better speeds even if your line stats are literally perfect. As a last tidbit, I mentioned that former Qwest territory was utilizing some dynamic systems where the DSLAM listens on the line to adjust the speed automatically to always give the customer the maximum speed possible without causing issues---he said that's being phased out, as well, and they're switching over to the "X feet = X speed" model for everything. This strikes me as insane---to actively deny individuals who have COMPLETELY stable, low error rate connections that are capable of much higher data rates purely because they've decided to go with a a primitive system that doesn't give a crap about line stats anymore. And rural/small town users, once again, get the shaft, as this largely doesn't impact many people in even mid-size towns (10,000+). I think I've just about lost all faith in the company---I'm pretty sure not many other DSL providers stoop to *this* level of insanity by having a near complete disregard for measured line stats for what speeds they offer.

I made this change yesterday and now using a Netgear Nighthawk as router. I chose "transparent 201" out of the four bridge options on the Technicolor C2000t but don't know what the differences are. ?? Everything is working but wasn't sure if I had the best bridge option chosen.
