C3000Z modem, VDSL2 service nominally 80/10. Every few weeks the modem will disconnect completely, requiring a power cycle. But the strange thing is DSL0 has relatively low SNR, but the connection is stable. DSL1 has healthier SNR but experiences frequent retrains and has very high CRC error counts.
I'm assuming this indicates intermittent noise on the DSL1 line, but is there anything else in these stats I'm missing? Centurylink has been less than helpful because a reboot fixes things, for a while.

Zyxel C1100Z 40Mbps?
According to CL own modem compatibly page, my Zyxel C1100Z modem is good for up to 80Mbps, but when I tried to up my speed from 20 to 40Mbps, they said I needed a new modem....
So how do I know what modem I need if their own page is wrong?

Service Outage in Marion, Iowa. Five Days..
Last Thursday (Aug 1) out CenturyLink service failed, and at first the Techs said it was due to a power outage(s). Most likely caused by Alliant Energy doing a lot of work on the utility poles along the road near the CL boxes and my apartment complex. Since we didn't get service back restarting the modem, and the Techs thought everything was working fine on their end and Service call was scheduled for Saturday afternoon (Aug 3). The Tech called up Friday morning and repeated that the outage was caused by a power outage and asked us to once again cycle the modem, and to let him know if it worked. It didn't.
Saturday afternoon comes around and the Tech doesn't show up, nor does he call as to why. I call Tech support again and the issue now is on their end, so they didn't won't be sending out techs until its resolved, but that they thought the issue would be fixed by Monday (Aug 5), but also scheduled a service call for Monday (mid-morning). So this morning I call tech support again to try and get an update about what was going on, since there was still no service. The first one I talked with could only say that the issue was on their end and was being worked on. Since the issue had not be fixed yet, the scheduled service call would not show up again. They also mentioned that they hoped to have the issue would be resolved by 7pm Monday evening, and if it was not, I was to call back and schedule another service for Wednesday (the soonest they could get anyone out apparently).
So 7pm comes and goes without service being restored, and I call up tech support again. The tech I talked with this time got a bit more information for me about what was going on. Apparently the DSLAM box up the hill from the apartment complex (right in the path of all the work that Alliant Energy has been doing) failed Friday night (Aug 2) and they needed to order in replacement parts. According to the information he got, the CL techs were currently working on getting the new parts installed and the best case scenario would be to have service restored by 10pm Monday night, or by 7pm Tuesday.
Since the DSLAM boxes were just up the hill from where I lived, I could step outside and look. No trucks were there, and when I drove up to where they were, none of the boxes looked new (I'm guessing whatever was replaced or being worked on was inside and didn't need an entirely new box).
TLDR; Is there any kind CL rep who could let us know what is going on and when our service could be restored? Thanks.

Future North Carolina network upgrades
I currently have 10/1 dsl in Whitsett, NC. I had a tech out recently to fix slow service and he said I should be able to upgrade to bonded service. Called customer service to ask about the upgrade and they said they would not do it because service in my area was going to be upgraded in 2 to 3 months. Not sure if I believe them as they seem to have one foot out of the door in our market. Does anyone know what they are up to?

[Qwest] CL Aerial Fiber? 1000 feet from Aerial Drop. Possibilities?
Looking for a CL Tech / Engineer's help here.
My address, states "Advanced Fiber Technology" and yet I have Bonded VDLS2 10/1M. No news here on update/upgrades. So I'm trying to take thing as far as I can so CL might help :)
Overview
Along our road CL has aerial fiber feeding an additional Cabinet up the road by a few miles. I'm roughly 9000' North of the Main Cabinet/DSLAM that has been fiber fed for years. First Picture Below shows current DSLAM/Cabinets etc.
I was first told, I'd never gain access to aerial line. But since then, CL has done aerial drops at each other road intersection within the past 6-12 months. One intersection is roughly 1000' to the south (Second Image ). There's additional equipment here as shown in the photo as well.
In our front yard we have an aerial pole that runs over to the power poles. These power poles are also where the CL aerial fiber is running to the additional cabinet about 3 miles up the road.
I'm in pretty good shape as I have Aerial Poles ready, so no boring is needed which seems to be a barrier and huge cost. What's possible with this setup? Would CL let me connect at the intersection 1000' down the road?
Also, I have had a few correspondences with the Power Company regarding pole attachment if I need to run a fiber line all the way back to Main DSLAM and connect in to CL's network.
Any addition work I should complete to give me the best shot at CL assisting me? I'm not looking to spend 200K by any means, but I don't mind shelling out a money upfront if speed can happen.

Site Survey?
I live in Milwaukie, OR. When I type in my street address, i am eligible for 1.5mbit DSL. It also asks me for unit information, even though it is a house which is strange. If I enter the address of the house next door, it jumps to 100mbit dsl availability. Is it possible that the info in their system is incorrect and I am eligible for more? If so, how would I go about contacting CL beyond the sales reps who just say 1.5mbit should be fine for me?

Goodbye and Good Riddance CenturyLink!
I've been a captive Embarq/CenturyLink DSL customer since 2007. Since that time, I've endured countless outages, bandwidth exhausts, evening high latency, and a multitude of billing issues (I know I'm preaching to the choir here...)
Since 2007, I've had two (2!) increases in bandwidth - in late 2007 I was given the ability to go from 5 to 10Mbps, and in 2013 I was able to upgrade to bonded DSL to go from 10 to 20Mbps. I know that I'm actually fortunate with those speeds when it comes to legacy Embarq territory as a huge number are still stuck with less than 10Mbps.
Enter West Carolina Tel (https://gigupgreenwood.com) - a local fiber co-op that is headquartered in an adjacent county. Through the grace of the broadband gods, they have begun fiber deployment in our area and recently have begun construction in our neighborhood. They offer symmetrical gigabit speeds with no cap (price list here: https://www.wctel.net/wp-content/uploads/2018/02/SC-Pricing.pdf).
Needless to say, I will be dropping CenturyLink the day my fiber order is placed and is turned on. It will be a phone call that is a long time coming.
P.S.
If anyone is interested I will document the fiber install with some pictures.

Suggestions for alternative to ZyXel C3000Z modem
Hello all,
I'm leasing a ZyXel C3000Z from CL. I'm having some problems with slow internet that is always fixed by power-cycling the modem. This happens 1-2 times per day, usually in the morning. As soon as modem reboots, fast speed and low latency returns.
I'm not 100% sure it's the modem, but I'd like to try a new/better modem first. However, I'd like to get a good one, any recommendations?
I'm in rural Montana, and the CL service is quite new. They ran fiber in the street last year, but I'm still connected with copper (I'm a long way from the pedestal).
My internet speed is only 20/0.8 - that's the best they could do. The modem has no CRC errors or FEC corrections, DSL quality is reported as 'Good' (in the modem).
If you think I'm barking up the wrong tree about the problem, let me know.
Thanks, Daniel.

Static IP Addresses
So I'm going to order some addresses from CL. Just wanted to clarify a few things.
So for IPv4 a block of 8 only has 5 usable addresses, just checking thats because I get a mini subnet so I "loose" some addresses to network, router, broadcast addresses? E.g.
192.168.0.0 - network (un-assignable)
192.168.0.1 - router (pre-assigned)
192.168.0.2-6 - (assignable)
192.168.0.7 - broadcast (un-assignable)
That sound about right (and yes, I'm aware they won't assign a 192 block).
For IPv6 addresses, they claim to give you a usable subnet. Does anyone know the size of the subnet they assign. I would hope it would be enough to cover a full IPv4 subnet?
Thanks all!

need new modem?
So I have a Technicolor CT100T. Everything works great for a couple hours and then my DSL Line status gradually goes to from GOOD to MARGINAL and eventually POOR. Rebooting the modem puts the DSL Line status back to GOOD, but again, it will get lower as time goes on. I've had techs check the line twice and nothing major has been found.
Any suggestions? Should I swap out the modem for a new one/different brand?

[Embarq] Failure when attempting to forward spam to spam@centurylink.net
When trying to forward spam to 'spam@centurylink.net' from my Ubuntu Linux desktop using Evolution I get:
An error occurred while sending. How do you want to proceed?
The reported error was “DATA command failed: [P4] Message blocked due to spam content in the message.”.
I've had no problems in the past with this.
Any ideas on what to try? Mail is downloaded from the server and then deleted from the server so no messages are left in the spam folder so I can't try it from webmail.

Big CL outage

PC requirements for 1gig service.
Hello! I got gigabit from CL last week and immediately had speed issues. I ended up reinstalling Win10 and was able to get speeds up to 900 down. I had already scheduled a tech so I just let them come anyway and they suggested I get a 3rd party router if I wanted to see my WiFi speeds increase as well. I decided on a Netgear Nighthawk AC1900 because it supports some additional features. I swapped the routers and everything went downhill. Even after switching back to the CL router I can't seem to get my speeds back up to 900+.
I've got two PCs here that are very close in specs, my brother's is a bit better will get speeds around 850-900, while mine only gets 650. I started to wonder if there were minimum specs for taking full advantage of 1G service. Both PCs are running ASUS mobo with i5 chips and EVGA Nvidia GPUs. My Bother has 8gb RAM while mine has 12, this is the only spec where my machine is a bit better.
edit: I should also mention that I'm getting these speeds from speedtest. I was also getting 900+ at DSLreports, but now both machines test around 150-200 on DSLr.
I'm really lost on what to do or even what I should expect. With Cable I always had roughly the right speed, this Fiber thing is driving me crazy being on the phone with "tech support" from both CL and Netgear for hours...
Any advice will be appreciated.
Thanks!

Moved from CL DSL 80 to Fiber - PPP wont connect
So for years, I've had various DSL speeds, starting at 768kb to the latest being 80mb. I've always run my dsl modem in bridging mode and let a Fedora PC server as the actual router / firewall, so therefore it always handled the ppp negotiation.
Now, in the last couple weeks, the long awaited 1000mb fiber in the street has been activated and I elected to upgrade. The install itself went painless, but when it came to the activation the tech said the same ppp negotiation would be in place.
So he installed the ONT, kept the CL Technicolor C2100T modem in place (simply removing the phone line and hooking up the ethernet to the ONT), we turn everything on and ... nothing. The Fedora ppp software would not connect. There were no changes to the ppp credentials, but it still would not connect.
/var/log/messages had a simple sequence like this:
ug 24 16:59:24 murdock network[28969]: Bringing up interface ppp0: [ OK ]
Aug 24 16:59:24 murdock pppd[29379]: pppd 2.4.7 started by root, uid 0
Aug 24 16:59:24 murdock NetworkManager[685]: [1566683964.9027] manager: (ppp0): new Generic device (/org/freedesktop/NetworkManager/Devices/64)
Aug 24 16:59:24 murdock pppd[29379]: Using interface ppp0
Aug 24 16:59:24 murdock pppd[29379]: Connect: ppp0 /dev/pts/3
Aug 24 16:59:55 murdock pppd[29379]: LCP: timeout sending Config-Requests
Aug 24 16:59:55 murdock pppd[29379]: Connection terminated.
Aug 24 16:59:55 murdock pppd[29379]: Modem hangup
Aug 24 16:59:59 murdock pppoe[29380]: Timeout waiting for PADO packets
Aug 24 16:59:59 murdock pppd[29379]: Exit.
Aug 24 16:59:59 murdock pppoe-connect[29409]: PPPoE connection lost; attempting re-connection.
However if we turn the C2100T into routing mode, it still remembered the credentials, and a few adjustments to the /etc/sysconfig/network-script ifcfg files then everything works fine with the modem handling the ppp.
Now where I really want to get to is removing the C2100T all together for several reasons:
1. If it runs in bridging mode, then the only function it would be doing is the VLAN tagging 201, which I believe I can get Linux to perform. Just another unneeded device in the chain.
2. For an unknown reason, while the WAN negotiation speed is 1000mb, the ethernet is only connecting to my Fedora machine at 100mb. Even though I have a good, server quality Intel 4-port gigabit card interface card, and everything else will train to 1000, the C2100T is only training to 100. So this is really capping my throughput (yes I understand the irony of years and years where I would have given almost anything to get the wan anywhere close to 100, now I'm complaining that its my cap).
I have tried removing it already and connecting the ONT directly, it's ethernet will train to 1000mb, but I still have the ppp issue, and probably some VLAN tagging tweaking.
I'm at a loss of what the problem could be. I haven't found good diagnostics in the ppp daemon on Fedora to spit out any meaningful error messages.
The exact same Fedora machine, the exact same DSL Modem C2100T, same credentials, same configurations. Everything worked great on 80mb DSL and now fails on 1000mb fiber.
Thoughts?

Centurylink Fiber IPV6

CL speed tests unable to keep up with 1Gbps service (Phoenix, AZ)
I cut over to 1Gbps fiber a few weeks back. When the tech installed the service, their internal speed test showed 900Mbps+ bi-directional. Later, when I attempted to run my own speed tests against CL's public-facing speed test servers, I could never exceed 500Mbps down (sometimes no more than 250Mbps) while upload was consistently around 900Mbps. Several 3rd party test servers could hit 900Mbps+ bi-directional. Multiple, simultaneous speed tests to the CL servers showed a predicable decrease in performance per test, i.e. 2x tests @ 250Mbps vs. 1x test @ 500Mbps.
I contacted CL and was informed that it's a known issue and was being worked on. There is no ETA on when their speed test servers will be able to handle 1Gbps customers. I was unable to get any additional detail despite multiple attempts.
My only concern is that the "official," on-net means to validate performance doesn't work for a segment of their customers.
At any rate, I thought it might be useful to post in case someone else stumbles on the same issue. If anyone out there is "in the know," I'd love to hear a little more detail.
EDIT: This is my experience in Phoenix, AZ. It may be different market-to-market. Edited topic to reflect.
