I noticed that CenturyLink phone number 1 800 990 9896 says "after hours" on both Saturday and Sunday. What happens if someone has an outage or downtime on weekend?

Unacceptable Repair Scheduling for CenturylInk in Bassett, VA

Called CenturyLink technical concerning one of two ports on my 15 mb service not connecting resulting in 1/2 speed. The tech was unable to correct the issue remotely and scheduled me for a repair technician for 6/16/18. The tech never showed up and I still have the issue. I called later that evening (June 16) and inquired as to what was going on. The customer service person could not explain to me what happened and could only reschedule the repair for July 5th. I told her that was unacceptable. She told me that the repair tech stopped work at 5 pm and that she would call them on Monday to see if the repair could be expedited. She then told me that she didn't come into work until 7pm. I asked her how she would contact them when they would not be available after 5 pm and she replied that she would work something out. Well here it is Monday and I called and finally got a Supervisor who could only move it back to June 29 8:00am. That was the best that she could do, 24 days after my initial repair request. CenturyLink has me against the wall because that are the only game in town available to me here in rural VA. Still paying full price for 1/2 the service and unacceptable customer service. Looking for other options, possible Verizon with some sort of booster.

Dropping Comcast For CenturyLink DSL

Comcast jacked up my monthly internet service from $40 per month to $55. They talk about "loyalty." Of course they aren't loyal to their long-term customers, they only expect those customers to be loyal to them. The router purchase choices are confusing. Can anyone recommend the best modem/router for 40-80 mbps? Thanks.

Centurylink systems down says customer service

I called today to try to get a $10 + tax credit for my returned rented modem which they already received and the CenturyLink customer service agent who sounded like she just got out of bed told me that their Internet or systems there is down and they can't do anything. I told her that they are the Internet company, how could it be done and asked how often this sort of thing happens and she said sometimes. She then said to try back in a couple of hours. Is this pretty typical with CenturyLink?

CenturyLink and DNS

Many CL customers, myself included, have tried alternate DNS providers (such as 1.1.1.1) but had some problems with them. I recently had occasion to review the CL terms of service and found the following items relevant to DNS: "We block malicious sites and phishing sites to prevent fraud against our customers and to prevent our customers from getting infected via DNS (Domain Name Service) blackholing and Internet Protocol (IP) address blackholing." .... "Further, CenturyLink does not scan or otherwise monitor customers' content." They provide a fair amount of detail about their IP security practices at https://www.centurylink.com/aboutus/legal/internet-service-disclosure/full-version.html Assuming the above information is accurate, it doesn't appear to me that there would be a compelling privacy or security reason to switch DNS providers. CL's DNS is consistently the fastest for me when I test with the GRC benchmark tool, so I will probably stick with it and leave well enough alone :)

WiFi slower than expected

Just switched from Comcast to CenturyLink VDSL2 bonded. I have an Asus RT-AC68U router (stock firmware) that was connected to the cable modem. Comcast service was 55 down/5 up. Speed tests over wifi were showing 60-65 down and 6-7 up. Now I have the Asus taking care of PPPOE and connected to the Actiontec C1900A which is in bridge mode untagged (wifi is off). Speeds are supposed to be 80/10. Over ethernet I get 78-80 down and 9-10 up so I know I'm getting advertised speeds. However, when I connect via wifi and run a speed test I get anywhere from 25-60 down and 9-10 up. I would normally chalk this up to interference but Comcast was consistently showing advertised speeds over wifi. Plus the upload speeds over ethernet and wifi stay around 9-10 so I'd expect it to be lower if it was interference related. It's just the download speeds that are so far off. The only thing that has changed is the router handling PPPOE. Is this expected behavior or is there some way to get better speeds over wifi?

Bonded Service?

How do you tell if you can get bonded service? They are running a phone line from a road up where they just installed fiber and a mini dslam about 1 mile away, to my house. I talked to someone online and they have no idea if i can get bonded or not. Not sure if there is a good place to look or someone knows?

Hello, It looks as though fiber is being run in my area. Was hoping someone might be able to provide me a bit of information regarding what to expect. Here is some of the equipment that has been installed. For reference, I am in a legacy Embarq area.

When you offer blazing speeds of "up to 12 Mbps", you have to pay your customers $500 to sign up. Are they serious? If they spent a fraction of their marketing budget on their network I'd probably have fiber by now.

Dumped Cox for price jacking

I dumped Cox in Las Vegas about a month and a half ago after getting tired of their balloon payment system. I was paying $40 a month for Internet then it jumped to $65 at end of 12 months. Switching between roommates every 12 months became too much of a burdon. Now I'm using CenturyLink fiber for $45 a month for 40MBPS which is faster than what Cox gave me plus lower latency.

Mount Vernon MO-area construction?

Hello all, was wondering if there was anyone on this forum that was familiar with any of the new construction I have been seeing in the Mount Vernon, MO area? Specifically I have been seeing cabled layed on Hwy 174 from near I-44 east to at least the Lawrence/Greene County line. Familiar story...1.5M DSL "High Speed Internet" here for many years, with no evidence or prospect of upgrades...until now maybe? Been lurking here for years, thanks to all the folks that contribute here.

I have 80/40, I had 40/20 . Both services worked for a day or two, then large numbers of errors. Had three wide band techs out. I am 1070 feet from box. The techs switch my dsl lines, it is perfect for a day or two and then large number of errors. I have dsl lights going red. sometimes line two dsl would go to 20/5 . I am in sun lakes Az. It is very frustrating for me. I use chat to get help, they check lines and say very bad and dispatch tech.

Ordered new CL Gigabit Service today...

Today I scheduled an end to my Comcast service and ordered CenturyLink $80 Gigabit service. Comcast raised my rate to $70 for 250 Mb service, and even a lower speed would have increased my monthly bill, so I'm going to give CenturyLink fiber a try. Scheduled install is on 6/25. I picked up a nearly new Zyxel C3000Z on craigslist for $50, and also included a leased model in my order (which I will return without opening to avoid the $10/month lease charge). You can't order service without leasing or buying a router from CL, so I figured this would be the best option and least potential outlay of up front cash--I'd rather try to get $10 back from them (or let them have the $10) than $150. My intention is to get the PPPOE login info and plug it into my Asus AC1900 router, then re-sell the Zyxel if everything works as expected. Comcast goes bye bye July 1st--hopefully this is enough time to get the install done and any kinks worked out. I'm a little irked at the 30 day billing cycles for CL, but will live with it as it effectively saves some money over the post-billed $85 rate. I'll also be looking out for YouTube slowdowns/low resolution issues, and traffic problems in the evenings. Wish me luck--I'll update with my impressions.

Hey all. I'm in central Ohio and I'm currently using a grandfathered unlimited Verizon cell service as my internet service and have been for 5 or 6 years. I use between 120 and 200 gb of data a month at anywhere between 5-30 MBps. 3Mbps CenturyLink service was available at some point but I opted to keep using VZW. Now the availability page says no bandwidth. I'm told the box is a Calix mini FTTN DSLAM and according to Google Maps, it is 4975 feet down my driveway and down the road to the box. Anyone care to venture a guess as to what this could possibly mean for me?

Will try and keep this short....... Living in Rio Rancho, NM, fortunate to have serving equipment across the street. Have CL 140/20 service; works great. Saw a lot of activity at the enclosure the past few weeks, so went over, wondering if they were up to any good. Turned out they were replacing a shelf at the time. Asked about higher speeds. The tech said, sure, several gig customers on this street. (!!!). He did provide a caveat that he works on transport, so doesn't actually do work at customer homes. So after a few calls, I was told today that VDSL2 equipment has been *removed* from my street, likely in preparation for fiber. I'm supposedly the only home on the street with VDSL2 service at this point. Being suspicious of the validity of any of this, I checked available services at a few neighboring homes. All of them were only showing 7MB service available, which I was told would be the case by the last rep I spoke with. So, in your experience, does any of this pass the sniff test? I've been pondering Cable One for their ridiculously priced 1GB service. If there's hope for fiber from CL, I'll wait. Would love to think that fiber is coming, but I work in Telco field, so know how often customer service and field techs get it wrong (their intentions are good, just bad info conveyed to them). Thanks, --Grimmwit

Any way to avoid a tech install?

Recently I've been going back and forth between Comcast and CenturyLink. I left Comcast in April and signed up for CenturyLink's 60/30 plan, which required a tech install and worked out fine. A few weeks ago I got fed up waiting for a game update to download and decided to cancel CenturyLink and get Comcast's gigabit offering. Then I realized that most things (along with my wifi) can't even come close to gigabit speeds, so now I'm on the 250Mbps plan. I'm thinking of going back to 60/30 plan with CenturyLink because there's no contract and it's $25 cheaper a month. I called to see if they could just reactivate my service, but apparently I have to wait for an activation date about a week out and the 60/30 plan still requires a tech install, even though I just had it done in April with nothing changed. Is there any way I can get 60/30 again and avoid the $60 tech install? Can I order the 40/5 service (which requires no visit) and have them bump me up to 60/30 once they see my lines can handle it? TL;DR: I had 60/30 installed in April and required a tech visit. I switched back to Comcast a few weeks ago but now want to come back to CenturyLink's 60/30 service but don't want to pay/wait for another tech install. Is there any way to avoid it?

Is this password problem due to my modem or devices?

Hey, all! I'm trying to troubleshoot a problem with my home wi-fi. About a week ago, there was a thunderstorm that blew out a transformer in my neighborhood and we lost power. I don't know if this is related, but since that time, several of my Apple devices (iPhone, iPad, Apple TV) have had difficulty staying connected to the router's wi-fi network. The connection will drop, and the device will display a message saying that the password is incorrect and ask me to re-enter it. It won't accept the password. Eventually, the device reconnects to the router on its own, but this is happening so often (minutes between incidents) that the internet isn't usable. I'm not sure if the cause is the router or something in iOS. I haven't seen these same issues with a desktop Mac or other devices on the network, but they are used much less frequently so I might just be missing it. Any clues?
