Where to purchase modem

Hi all, currently have centurylink DSL (details below) and am looking for a replacement router for my actiontec GTWN784WN because most of the time I cannot access the GUI of the modem. Sometimes a reboot will fix it, other times I just acan;t get in, which is a shame because I like using the QOS feature of the modem Anyway, what modem would you recommend and where can I purchase? I looked at amazon and they have the C3000Z for example. I thought Best Buy at one point had dsl modems but I can't find them now. Thanks ATM-LLC BRIDGED 8/35 WAN TYPE ADSL-ADSL2+ LINE MODE ADSL2+ IPoE (DHCP)

Ok, so why is centruylink in my area blocking all these services? its not just a "port" block either. Its a full service block via an edge router. I have tested it to confirm it. I need at least ssh to work so i can do my school work. i have done the following for testing: turned off the firewall in the router turned off windows 10 firewall turned off anti virus made sure ports 22,21,990,3389,25565,25566,8080,80,8022,5322 were all open for each service. Nothing! but as soon as i turn it to a low level service, such as what my game server uses, works just fine over the WAN I do have control over router, but not the account:( thanks

ADSL2+ on ZyXel modem #C1100Z -- Overdrive or overprovisioning?

I'll ask this the best way I know how: 1.) I'm paying for 10 down/.7 up mbps. via ADSL2+ 2.) Routine connection is 11.775/0.892. Rock solid/ no CRC errors! 3) For months now connection rate changes periodically to 15.1/1.xxx 4.) Problem? Sometimes in hours or days DSL connection WILL DROP drop at the "overprovisioned" or call it what you want, connection rate. 5.) Sometimes dropped DSL will recover on its own, but most of the time I have to call in. 6.) Pair to outside connection at house AND my equipment inside in tiptop shape. No issues. 7.) What I can't figure out is why, why a few extra mbps downstream causes havoc eventually, eventually to the DSL signal/connection? 8.) Is there some limitation with the "Zyxel C1100Z"? 9.) Estimated Loop Length: 4144 feet Nobody at CL seems in rush to fix this problem. Thanks for any help. Specs at normal connection rate: SNR 16.8 dB 14.0 dB Attenuation 33.0 dB 15.4 dB Power 21.6 dBm 12.6 dBm

ISP battery backup?

$

Searching the web and I can’t find the answer. We have a UPS, so when the power goes out, the modem and router stay connected to the internet. But...internet goes down at about 2 hours into each power outage. It seems there is a battery backup somewhere in the system, but the ISP only has enough for 2 hours. FCC has battery backup times for cell towers (8 hours); are there rules on how long the ISP needs to keep broadband running in a power outage?

Is anyone else tired of CenturyLink's terrible peering?

Have had CenturyLink fiber 1 Gbps service for about 4 years now. And while thanks to tech like GPON the latency and reliability/uptime have been good, when I first got the service, websites like YouTube were unusable with only 480p videos able to be played consistently, downloads of video games have never gone above ~300 Mbps (and yes... on servers well capable of serving Gigabit connections), and general peering, even on speedtest.net servers, is bad and has gotten worse to local ones with higher pings and far slower speeds. CenturyLink doesn't even have a local server for speed testing anymore (it was removed within the last few months) and the lowest ping I get on there is to the CL Seattle server (~5ms), skipping ALL of the local servers. 😂 Yikes! Upstream peering has fared much much better than downstream, for sure, but it's still not what I would consider truly great. When I first got service, and it being fiber and a Gigabit connection, I was very excited to be able to make use of it! Only to be hugely letdown (to this day), that it has *never* downloaded anything anywhere close to 940 Mbps. This whole time, in real world usage, it's been running at nearly a third of what it should. And having been using cloud services like Shadow, and being able to test the internet on there and seeing how well it performs (even over great distance) in comparison, one can see that, yeah, this CenturyLink Gigabit experience is, well... really bad. Is anyone else tired of CenturyLink's peering being so bad for real world downloading? Surely they'll do something positive about it one day eh? We definitely hope...

Transparent Bridge Mode Questions

Ok, so I bought a new WiFi 6 router. In the past I used the Zyxel c1100z's routing functionality and had a Wireless AC access point hooked to that. This time though I bought a new Netgear Nighthawk and figured I would take advantage of it's more advanced routing features. I have Transparent bridge mode working, but what I don't understand is why the Internet light is flashing Green and Red? I thought it was supposed to be off when bridged? I hooked back into the modem with my laptop to see if I missed anything and it all looks above board. Not sure what I am missing. Is it something I should even be worried about?

Just pull a connection?

So, story time I guess! This started over a month ago we'll say? My equipment is a C3000Z, brand new wiring installed in my house when I got CL a couple/few years ago. I live in a very middle class, smack dab center, of Phoenix. I think I've given the long story leaving Cox and eventually get a bonded pair at 80/10. So, I noticed at night my new puppy had dug a cable up and wondered if that explained a couple recent resets in my modem to get back to speed and such. Well, tech comes out and instantly says that's Cox's cable (both had to install new cables to the house as old owners literally cut them somehow or someone did) and their cable was still buried far underground and safe. He checks my stuff out anyway as I told him and he works his magic and replaces some bad connections at the dslam most likely causing my issues. He also says I'm set for 100/10 in the system but he doesn't know why and says my lines are too far for that at all, but he gets it to 90/10 and I get almost that in any speed test so I was happy. My stats are for line one: Downstream - SNR 12.4, Attenuation 14.6, and power 17.0 Upstream - SNR 11.8, attenuation 7.8, and power 8.7 Line two: Downstream - SNR 12.6, Attenuation 14.8, and power 17.0 Upstream - SNR 12.2, attenuation 6.5, and power 7.1 Estimated loop line length is 1720ft and 1760ft respectively. Which I didn't think was far, if the condo complex wasn't right next to me, I could throw crap at my DSLAM and hit it. I'm told I'm approximately 0.2 miles from the box, which means wiring has to follow a pretty logical path to my house for the lines to think that. Anyway, fast forward to the dreaded week afters Christmas. I noticed a couple neighbors have out CL techs fixing...who knows. Honestly I thought I was the only customer, almost everyone on the block uses Cox. I joked about getting fiber here (seriously CL, do it!!) with one even. That evening I get a complaint from the kid about youtube loading slowly. I reset the modem, fine. Not fine though, the last week my first DSL line was just not connected. Nothing registered by the modem, wouldn't even show a light. My second line worked, but it had horrible stats, mostly thinking it was approximately 3x further from the DSLAM than usual and would maybe only connect at 12 and routinely the internet would just time out. I could reset the modem, but that didn't' seem to help, just waiting. So I call in a repair ticket back in. Should have been done on Friday... but my wife couldn't be bothered to stay an extra 20 minutes as they showed up when she was leaving to go 'shopping'. Side note - anyone want a wife? So I had to wait until a lovely Sunday morning. Tech is out, gruff dude who knows his stuff. He sighs at the spaghetti connections in my alleyway and seems at least happy CL isn't coming off the telephone pole. He says it's mostly likely DSLAM issues. He goes to the DSLAM - he confirms basically someone just disconnected my first line and probably messed with something on the second. He seemed incredulous I had a guy out here just weeks ago - he knew I wasn't actually lying though. He fixes me up, connection is back at 90/10 and speedtest shows it's fine. Haven't had any drops or timeouts since (only been a couple hours). My question is, why would they pull a connection? I get if it's an accident, but you don't try to fix your mistake? I at least am lucky to have 2 lines and with one down it wasn't a disaster, but single line customers would be up the creek. After the slow initial set up story I won't go over and was just CL corporate and not real issues, until now I've had solid service. It's a bit worrying.

Brought my new phone to my vacation home. Centurylink router will not accept the correct password, saying Incorrect Password. Everything else in the house maintained their connection and other phones and iPads we brought automatically reconnected. The phone has no problem logging onto public WiFi. Ideas?

WiFi slower than expected

Just switched from Comcast to CenturyLink VDSL2 bonded. I have an Asus RT-AC68U router (stock firmware) that was connected to the cable modem. Comcast service was 55 down/5 up. Speed tests over wifi were showing 60-65 down and 6-7 up. Now I have the Asus taking care of PPPOE and connected to the Actiontec C1900A which is in bridge mode untagged (wifi is off). Speeds are supposed to be 80/10. Over ethernet I get 78-80 down and 9-10 up so I know I'm getting advertised speeds. However, when I connect via wifi and run a speed test I get anywhere from 25-60 down and 9-10 up. I would normally chalk this up to interference but Comcast was consistently showing advertised speeds over wifi. Plus the upload speeds over ethernet and wifi stay around 9-10 so I'd expect it to be lower if it was interference related. It's just the download speeds that are so far off. The only thing that has changed is the router handling PPPOE. Is this expected behavior or is there some way to get better speeds over wifi?

[CenturyTel] Internet Service Speed Mystery

Okay so I live in a what I would call midsize town. Population around 12,000. What I for the life of me can't seem to understand how or why is there is a cherry pick fiber section in the back side of town that no one seems to know how it go there or where it is coming from. I have attached a map I know it kind of hard to understand what is going on but most of the town has 20meg. The central office is to the top right cut off of map. It falls to 3meg with no warning and goes a bit, but there is a RT deslam whatever you wanna call it on the line that just sitting there. Then you see two blocks in bottom left fiber and an island block in 3meg of fiber. Where could this fiber be from? How can we get it expanded? And lastly what in the heck is the RT doing its on the 20 / 3 cut off but doesn't appear to be doing jack shit on helping the 3meg area. And no that RT is not for fiber customers. That RT has been there 5 years before all subdivision built. All local techs say is the RT is fiber fed from CO. I asked if switching me from CO to RT is closer will increase speeds. I was told to change your loop to RT would drop you to 1.5 I asked tech why is RT even there and where did this fiber appear and how can we get it cross the street to fill the gap. He said i have no idea what you are talking about.

Ubiquiti ER-X IpV6 over PPPoE

I've been running an ER-X router behind a C1900A in bridged mode on ADSL for about a year and it's pretty much trouble free. Before the ER-X I had an old PC running PFSense as my router and with a few clicks I was running full IPv6, but that uses a lot of power and isn't quiet. For a couple weeks I put the C1900A back into router mode and it was super easy to have full IPv6 running, but I could see some slower performance. Now I want to set up IPv6 on the ER-X but so far everything I find shows there is a fair amount of setting up either via the config tree or command line, and all the configs I find are for earlier versions of EdgeMax so I'm not sure they will work with 2.0.8. Does anyone know of a config that works with ADSL over PPPoE in bridged mode for the ER-X with EdgeOS v2.0.8?

Speed *significantly* faster than advertised

Please forgive me if i say anything ignorant, i am only starting to attempt to become knowledgeable on all of this I currently have a single line DSL in the phoenix area. My advertised connection speed is 20/5. However, i actually get *50*/5. While i have read about people getting slightly higher than advertised speed, i have not found any other cases of it being this drastic. Would anyone care to comment on this? I will post some numbers from my modem on the bottom, though i am still learning what many of them mean. The reason i ask, i keep getting offers to upgrade my speed to 40/5. I assume this is bonded, and i've read some things to suggest that i'm less likely to get more than i pay for if i go bonded, so obviously why would i 'upgrade' to end up with slower speed. If i thought there was a chance i'd pay for 40/5 and actually end up with 100/5 or something, i would do that. Does anyone think such a thing is likely? Some numbers: Broadband Mode: VDSL2 - 8A Est Loop Length: 1000 SNR: 11 dB 21 dB Attenuation: (DS1)12.0, (DS2)27.3 dB (US1)1.9, (US2)22.0 dB Power: 17 dBm 8.2 dBm Appreciate any and all input, even if its pointing out my own ignorance. Thanks.

[CenturyTel] Anything in Centurylink's Operation That Can Block A Specific Web

$

For the last few days, I have been unable to reach my website using my CL connection. It works fine with everything else and is very stable overall. I can go through a VPN using my connection here and I can connect to my site perfectly. I update my website through my CL connection using FTP and that works as well. But there is an update feature that updates my warning, watches and advisories page that works by invoking a VBS file on the webserver. Those are not working either due to the inability to access my site. My host says it is an ISP problem and CL through a live chat says it's a hosting problem. I personally feel it's a server issue. Any help appreciated and if any Centurylink folks are reading this maybe you can bump things up a notch and get this problem to the right people :)
