So my big day of Bonded install was today ... and the Technician has already came and went. Fail.
He showed up expecting to be doing a "normal" internet install of 3-6 Mbps depending. He was confused, "My line is reading you have a modem already... what do you need me for ?" When I explained I was getting Bonded installed today, at least 15 Mbps maybe 20, 1.5-2 Mbps UL, he flatly said, "No... no way. Not going to happen. Impossible." We went back and forth a few times and he just said, "No." Turns out, he was doing my territory for the last 20 years, and the technician I met last week who told me I absolutely-definitely COULD get Bonded, at least 15 Mbps, is "wrong, doesn't know what he's talking about" ... He claims that this guy is not normally assigned to my area, and was just filling in, and doesn't understand the situation, and that the lines here simply cannot handle it, there isn't enough speed/power/distance/etc. Never going to work, impossible, we don't do that here.
Eventually I got him to upgrade my UL speed from .446 to .574. Woohoo.
And it seems like I am going to have to start seriously considering the satellite, or work on somehow convincing Spectrum to come down to our area, because the tech says my area is the absolute end of CL's territory, they don't really care about it, and they certainly are not going to do any upgrading. He basically told me I was extremely lucky to get what I get now. (A Common Theme among CL.)
I have to say I'm very disappointed but I knew this was going to happen.
Sucks.

what is Centurylink installing?
I live in a rural/ semirural area in Kansas (near Perry) and have had Centurylink dsl. Yesterday, a contractor was digging with a backhoe in on the edge of the road right of way and installed something. I went out and asked, and he said we are getting high speed internet. I asked what type, and as I understood him, it would be by "wifi;" that there would be a transmitter apparently on a post in front of each house, and Centurylink would be installing fiber between each transmitter with horizontal boring. He said they would not be connecting fiber directly to houses.
I'll be delighted to get true high speed Internet, if that's what's coming. Does anyone know what is being installed? How fast will it be? Will it work? I may have misunderstood or only partially understood what the technician said.

Since 2009, as part of its National Broadband plan, the Federal Communications Commission has had a project to test broadband performance, managed by an independent contractor, SamKnows Ltd. The FCC is continuing this test for 2017. The FCC is looking for additional volunteers who will agree to allow a testing device to be attached to the broadband connection in their homes.
The test covers major aspects of an Internet connection, from the speed of downloading a large file, to the quality of video streaming or video chatting with others. The purpose of the project is to provide consumers with more information about actual broadband performance from America's leading wireline broadband providers.

prepaid vs postpaid and bonding
Currently in my area prepaid is $10/month cheaper than postpaid. Customer service rep tried to steer me towards postpaid, saying advertised speeds were "guaranteed" 90% of the time vs 50% of the time for prepaid. I'm skeptical - how could that be? In short, is it worth extra to go with postpaid?
Also...
Given that tech install is required at 80Mbps and above, I'm guessing that's where bonding happens. 80Mbps and 60Mbps are the same price, except for the $60 required install for 80. If the 60 option delivered said speed reliably I would probably be happy with it and would just assume save the $60 (as the seedbox I use to download virtually everything barely sustains half that speed). So, will paying the extra for bonded service be worth it for me?

[CenturyTel] ZyXel c1000z port forward fail
I have used RemoteDesktop for years, and the are a few hoops to jump through, but I've always been able to make it work from outside my home network, until now.
To recap:
1. Port forward is set in the modem to desired ports and browser port check tool shows them open
2. Machines on local network are set to static network ip.
3. Windows firewall has inbound port rule on each machine.
4. Windows system is set to enable remote desktop.
5. The RDP port is changed in the registry for each machine
6. Remote Desktop works inside the network, but I cannot get through the modem even though the specific port tests open.
Any ideas?

How to change PPP username for CenturyLink Gigabit?
I've been getting the runaround on the phone when I tried to have a nasty typo corrected in my PPP username on my CenturyLink fiber account. The PPP username is "lastnamefirstname"@qwest.net but they really butchered my first name in a very unflattering way. They tried to tell me they can't change it, that it doesn't matter, that no one sees it, that typos are common (really?!), that the typo is better for my security (double really?!) I mean every excuse in the book was thrown at me. Come on, it's the principle of the thing! Then they tried to tell me that my first name was entered incorrectly when they set up my account and I had to call some "Simple" account phone number to change it, but when I look online my first name is correct everywhere except in the PPP username. I didn't even bother calling again after the treatment I got, especially since I was told my PPP username would not change regardless. Has anyone had any success changing or fixing their PPP username with Century Link and if so, how did you do it please? I'm loving this symmetrical 940/940 2ms ping service on a 1:32 GPON, but customer service has been horrendous! At least they managed to give me my PPP password. Thanks for any ideas!

WiFi slower than expected
Just switched from Comcast to CenturyLink VDSL2 bonded. I have an Asus RT-AC68U router (stock firmware) that was connected to the cable modem. Comcast service was 55 down/5 up. Speed tests over wifi were showing 60-65 down and 6-7 up. Now I have the Asus taking care of PPPOE and connected to the Actiontec C1900A which is in bridge mode untagged (wifi is off). Speeds are supposed to be 80/10. Over ethernet I get 78-80 down and 9-10 up so I know I'm getting advertised speeds. However, when I connect via wifi and run a speed test I get anywhere from 25-60 down and 9-10 up. I would normally chalk this up to interference but Comcast was consistently showing advertised speeds over wifi. Plus the upload speeds over ethernet and wifi stay around 9-10 so I'd expect it to be lower if it was interference related. It's just the download speeds that are so far off. The only thing that has changed is the router handling PPPOE. Is this expected behavior or is there some way to get better speeds over wifi?

Mount Vernon MO-area construction?
Hello all, was wondering if there was anyone on this forum that was familiar with any of the new construction I have been seeing in the Mount Vernon, MO area?
Specifically I have been seeing cabled layed on Hwy 174 from near I-44 east to at least the Lawrence/Greene County line.
Familiar story...1.5M DSL "High Speed Internet" here for many years, with no evidence or prospect of upgrades...until now maybe?
Been lurking here for years, thanks to all the folks that contribute here.

Happy CL customer
So, back at the end of January, to the start of February I switched to Centurylink from Cox (do I even need to make up epitaphs for them with that name?). Cox had progressively increased my speed, along with the price. I was at 50mbps or 35mpbs or something and downgraded to the 15mbps plan. It would hover around 16-17 on the downlink and 2 on the up. But, I realized looking back on bills that's the plan I had with Cox years ago starting and the same price. When the price went up again, about $1 a month each year, I was done.
So i went and got signed up with Centurylink - I was only able to get 12mbps and 1 up. I kept telling the sales rep I would need and pay for new lines run into my house and they would need to plan to re-wire my house from the alley. I live in the heart of Phoenix for reference. When they showed up, the guy didn't have information to do either. He obviously ran some janky wire from my box to the alley set up, which is luckily right outside my gate so there isn't some 100 foot cable. It was bad though and a bit upset, also I wasn't home and only the wife was. No house rewire as requested. My speeds were horrid - 4mbps at best, constant disconnects. It estimated my length from the dslam at like 7500ft. They came back to install it and I was 'eh' because it was outside the home and just 1 room, but whatever. I know where my dslam is and it's only a few blocks away - it now said like 1800 feet and I got 14.5mbps down and like .9 up.
A few months go by and all is good. When I paid my bill the site said I could get 20mbps down, 2 up. So I set up a date for it and they came (late of course). I got myself a pair bond of 10/1, and I'm sitting at about 18.5 down and like 1.8 up. I'm pretty happy, guy gave me the new 3000z modem and all is good. Few days now and no slow downs and everything is much snappier and blah blah.
Anyway, Cox is horrible. I had to call 3 times to cancel. They asked why and I stated I get similar speeds for way less and it was still a hassle. I eventually stated if they sent me another bill, I wouldn't pay it and dispute anything. Also, it's odd I only got single line at around 14, now pair bonded at 20. I'm smack dab off Central in Phoenix. I checked a friend further north and closer to the mountain and he can get 80. My dad's house not far from there can only get 1.5. I checked old addresses south of me on central and some can get 20, some 12, some only 7! Why is it so piecemeal with CL in Phoenix? I'd think they'd lay some fiber in the heart of the city at least to compete with Cox.

[CenturyTel] Port Forwarding no longer possible
Back some time ago, months maybe, I went through the steps to install a new wireless router to work in tandem with my Centurylink modem/router (Actiontec PK5001A) and had nothing but trouble with the Asus AC1200 router. I finally gave up and boxed it up and put it in the closet. What I noticed shortly afterward was I no longer could communicate with my observatory computer via the web browser even though the LAN address and port number was valid. Checking the modem I can see the port was still forwarded but checking the port showed it as closed. In fact the only forwarded ports still working that had been forwarded were the ones on the wireless IP cameras installed in and around the observatory. I do have an account with No-IP to track my changing WAN address as mine isn't static. I also have several programs that communicate with the telescope automation system that do so through forwarded ports that do work now but did previously.
The home network consists of 5 desktop Windows computers, 1 tablet, 2 laptops, and several TVs, Dish network and so on. Windows systems are both Windows 7 Pro 64 bit as well as Windows 10 Pro 64. I use ESET antivirus and one of its newest features is network monitoring. From that I learned that there appear to be so LAN addresses I'm not familiar with and have no idea where there originated from. My LAN IP addresses all are 192.168.0.xxx and there no appear to be some new ones that are 192.168.50.xxx and 192.168.51.xxx. Pining these shows no returns. The router is the Actiontec PK5001A and additionally there are 3 switches, one in the observatory, one behind the living room entertainment center, and the main one in the basement. All are rated 10/100/1000 and are wired Cat5E. There is one wireless access point in the observatory for the wireless connections to the IP cameras.
I guess as a not well verse network person I'm looking for advice as to where to start and what I should do. I would really like to get port forwarding back on the wired network.

Cancelling PrismTV --> Upgrading Internet... What to expect?
Well, CL rate increases to PrismTV finally broke me. Pushed me to cut the cord and convert to Vue.
I decided to try sticking with CL for internet since they have 40Mb for $45 PFL. Should be plenty for me.
Anyhow, I'm wondering what I should expect. Tech has to upgrade the line -- I'm guessing to add a pair and enable bonding since I need to upgrade modems (C2000T to C3000Z).
I've attached a screenshot of my current DSL connection via the C2000T. Is there anything there that suggests I won't be able to get 40Mb?

Port forwarding not working or intermittent
I've posted on this before, but I think I've zeroed in on the problem and it must be the ISP (CenturyLink) or the router (ZyXel c1000).
I can always get remote desktop to work inside my network, and it has worked intermittently from outside my home network. Port check tools are showing the ports I have forwarded as being blocked, although it has occasionally shown them as open. I called CLK technical support and they told me there is no way they can help me with this. I'm not sure what my options are at this point. Could it be the router? Any suggestions appreciated. My setup is just the CLK router, and a couple of PC's. I've used remote desktop for years, but very little at my present location.

Simplepay price drop gigabit service--available to existing accts?
I signed up for 'price for life' $80 gigabit simplepay CL internet service in late June, and just saw that the price dropped to $75 (and other tiers seem to be lower as well). Has anybody gotten CL to drop their price? Is it even possible without killing/restarting service?

Billed for a returned Modem with late charges
CenturyLink I believe is trying to run a scam or they're so inept, year after year after year when modem get returned they try to bill customers for the returned modem as if it wasn't and if you don't have your receipt then you don't have any proof. It's only happened 100% of the time to me and family members by CenturyLink. What was really annoying is inform them in writing I'm not going to pay a bill that's not corrected until I can see that the charges have been reversed, so they, CenturyLink, wrongly chargedme for the modem that was returned. Employee at The UPS Store had warned me kindly enough to keep the receipt no matter what that CenturyLink is famous for claiming they never received their modem.
