I purchased a Zhone 6712-W1 DSL modem to replace my leased modem from CenturyLink. I wanted 2 things.
1. I do not like leasing something for a long period of time without an option to rent 2 own or purchase later at a pro-rated price and I did not want to purchase a new device from CenturyLink ($99) because of cost and limited functionality.
2. I did not want wireless built into my DSL modem. I want to use my own access points and not rely on the DSL router/Modem to supply wireless. CenturyLink does not currently offer this in any routers that they are willing to sell me currently.
The Setup with my CenturyLink -
This was not super easy, meaning it did not work right out of the box. I also did not find any information referring to the setup of this particular router although I did eventually find some posts for the Zhone 6718-W1 (wireless router version) which helped me to get the device setup correctly and working. It is not difficult but I was not happy with the lack of information for this particular device.
Here are the things that I had to do to get the device to work on my connection. (My CenturyLink DSL is VDSL2 (Hooper, UT).)
1. I called into CenturyLink tech support and got my PPP user and password for my connection.
2. I logged into the router (admin account with default admin password adminxxxxxx (where xxxxxx is the last 6 digits of the routers serial number))
3. I clicked on Quick Setup on the menu on the left side.
4. I added the following values to the Quick Setup screen.
- I did not check Automatic Configuration.
- VPI 0
- VCI 32
- Left Encapsulation Mode at LLC/SNAP-BRIDGING
- Protocol: PPPoE
- Entered my PPP Username and PPP Password that I called and received from CenturyLink tech support.
- Made sure that Use Static IP address was not checked.
5. Clicked Apply/Save
At this point the DSL light began to blink more rapidly and then after 10-20 seconds became solid. The internet light remained dark.
6. I then clicked on the Advanced Setup link on the left side menu.
7. Click on the WAN Service Link.
8. Click Add
9. On the WAN Service Configuration page I entered the following values.
- Select WAN Service type: PPP over Ethernet (PPPoE)
- Left the default Service Description but made a note of the name
- 802.1P Priority: 0
- 802.1Q VLAN ID: 201
- Left the Network Protocal Selection at IPV4 Only
10. Click Next
11. Entered the following information in the PPP Username and Password page
- my PPP Username and Password. (again recieved from CenturyLink tech support)
- Left PPPoE Service Name empty
- Authentication Method: Left at AUTO
- MTU: 1492
- Left Enable KeepAlive checked with all defaults
- Left Limit Retry Time checked with all defaults
- Left all other checkboxes unchecked (was default)
12. Click Next
13. moved the new interface (was the default name that I made a note of two pages ago) to the Selected Default Gateway Interfaces box.
14. Click Next
15. Move the new interface to the Selected DNS Server Interfaces box.
16. Click Next
17. On the WAN Setup - Summary page Click Apply/Save.
That was it. The DSL reestablished and the Internet Light went to green. I then went in and removed the initial connection that was created with the quick setup from the WAN Service Table listed when you click on WAN Service on the left menu, just to clean things up.
I hope that this helps. The device has been very good and has a lot of features.
