Weird issue with my DSL/phone - resolved by CL

This one was really wonky - up until last Thursday my DSL and phone were rock solid with CenturyLink. On Friday morning I started getting drops and retrains on my DSL however checking my phone still had a good dial tone with no static or cutouts. This went on until around 4 PM and then my DSL was solid again however it was training up slower at ~40 Mbps instead of the usual 56 for download. Upload was still at 5.5 Mbps. Happened again on Saturday and Sunday with the DSL between 7 AM - 4 PM but phone was fine. Monday I lost dial tone around 9 AM but still had DSL and it was no longer retraining. Checked it at the NID - no dial tone so got a chat going and requested a repair. Field tech showed up today and checked it at the faded green box (pedestal?) in my front yard. Had a chat and he didn't know about any maintenance being done on the DSL side but I definitely had a problem with the wiring back to the central office. About 10-15 minutes later was back and hooking stuff up in the box and closing it up. And I had dial tone again. He found a broken wire a few blocks away; what ever the fault was it did allow my DSL to work but at lower speeds but no dial tone. Maybe a break where the broken wire still allowed the higher frequency signals of the DSL to get through but not the phone signals but no idea why the DSL was acting up from 7 AM to 4 PM. Rebooted my modem since it had been up for 191 days (!) so I figured it was due for a reset. And I'm back to 58/5.5 Mbps speeds again the last time I checked. Anyway. kudos to the field tech who fixed the issue; at least it was a nice day to be outside here in Frostbite Falls, MN looking for broken wires in the neighborhood. :)
