Hey guys,
I live in a rural area where there are no good high speed Internet options. I couldn't even get satellite installed due to trees blocking the view of the satellite.
CenturyLink (I live in an old CenTel area - that's Central Telephone - which was bought by Sprint) has been telling me that DSL is coming since last year.
The AdTran TA5000 DSLAM is about 1.2-1.5 miles away from my house, as measured by road distance. I understand that line distance isn't going to be exactly the same, but it should be very close, as the lines follow the road all the way to the DSLAM.
I spoke with three CenturyLink representatives. Two prior to placing the order, just to confirm that I can actually get service (I tried signing up last year, and they sent me a modem, but service wasn't actually available). One rep was very knowledgeable and checked a variety of databases to confirm that I can get service. He said I could get 6mbit down. The 2nd rep also confirmed it, so I placed an order for 6mbit service. I contacted a 3rd rep because I wanted to know if I'd need an ADSL modem or a VDSL2 modem.
The installation here is brand new, so it turns out that they're using VDSL2, which was confirmed by the 3rd rep I spoke to.
Here's where the sob story starts: A day after placing the order, I got a rather unprofessional sounding phone call from CenturyLink telling me I live too far away to qualify for even the 512k connection.
Not about to take "no" for an answer so easily, I thought I'd check in here. According to Wikipedia, VDSL2 can deliver 1-4 mbps at distances up to 3 miles.
So the driving distance to my DSLAM is only 1.3 miles or so, even if the loop was twice as long, that still comes in at under 3 miles.
Why can't I get DSL here? I'd be happy with even a 1 megabit connection! I'm also willing to pay to have any necessary repeaters or conditioners installed along the line.
Can anyone here provide some insight? Maybe the CenturyLink guys on this forum could look at some more technical information to make sure I actually can't get service here, or perhaps they could lead me in the right direction to help me get a repeater installed somewhere along the loop?
Thanks for any help anyone can offer. Really appreciate the forums here!
