I live in a newer subdivision in Columbia, MO, about 5-6 years old now. When I moved here, CenturyLink promised me 10 MB down. However, when the tech came out to install service, the fastest stable speed he could configure for me was 3 MB down. It's now 5 years later and I'm still stuck at only 3 MB down. CenturyLink is busily upgrading other parts of my city to 100 MB, but I'm still stuck at 3 MB. Joey has stated that no upgrades are scheduled for my neighborhood any time soon because of "budget cuts". Whatever. 3MB down and 512k up are ridiculously slow in 2014 and it doesn't even meet the government's definition of broadband. I'm tired of waiting.
And for those of you who say switch to cable, I wish I could! DSL is my only option where I live. I'm actually paying over $200 a month to have bonded DSL right now because I need the speed for work. And moving isn't an issue either as it would impact me heavily financially. Remember, I was promised 10 MB down when I checked before moving here and that was in 2009. And yes, I live in the city - not in the country.
Edit: Oh yeah - I called in about 2 or 3 years ago asking if upgrades were available in my area and was told they were - I could be switched to another CO which would give me faster speed. However, I would have to switch to a different plan and contract. I happily agreed, knowing the faster speed would be worth it. The switch occurred a week later and guess what - my internet was even slower - barely making 2 MB down. I called to complain and asked to be switched, and was told I would be able to go back to my previous agreement which didn't have a contract. Got my first bill a month later and I was being charged at the new contract's prices. Took me quite awhile to get that straightened out.
Called again about a year later and was told upgrades were definitely coming to my neighborhood in the next few months. Right. I guess those were cancelled in the "budget cuts".
