I just got 40Mbps service installed and canceled comcast today and the DSL Speed on the modem web admin page shows 40.127/5.120 Mbps speeds but when I do a speed test using a web browser with a computer connected by cat 5 cable to the modem I get only about 31.8Mbps/4.8Mbps (which I am not complaining about, just wondering the difference in the numbers...perhaps the CenturyLink number is a calculated possible max?). Now when I use my Linksys wireless connected to the CL modem (I have a number of extenders on this system so I don't want to use the CL wireless) I get 17Mbps/4.5Mbps speeds.
Why does the modem show such a faster speed than web download/upload speed tests? Which is right? The wireless actual effective speed is much lower. I have a Linksys WRT120N that supposedly can support 150Mbps so it does not seem like I should loose that much speed when connecting wirelessly. I am not an expert but it seems I am missing something. I have attached a screen shot of CL modem stats. Most of the computers in the house connect wirelessly so I am wondering if I am paying for 40Mbps but will never really get more than 19Mbps or so so why pay the extra $? If I downgrade to 20Mbps service from comcast will I get an even lower wireless speed?
