So about two years ago, Centurylink was canvassing our condos for new service. At that time they could only offer like 20mbs down or something, and pretty dismal upload. I was (am) currently with Cox and getting about 120 down and 20-25 up, so wasn't looking for a change.
Now they just canvased our area again, but this time they are offering 80mbs up/down. A big change in the speed obviously, and having the increased upload is key to me. The price smacked me in the face also, as $55/month "for life". For an extra $10 I could get 100mbs up/down. Obviously, this beats Cox's speed and price, currently paying $93/month and it seems to increase by about $5/year; just went up again btw.
Looking over the currently compatible hardware on CL's site, I see many choices. Looks like the quoted speeds are VDSL2, but the rep did mention fiber also. Not a big fan of $10/month to lease equipment, so what's a good recommendation? Seems like the XyZEL, Actiontec and Technicolor are supporters of 100Mbs over VDSL2, and they support vectoring; which I read elsewhere as recommended to futureproof.
Any other suggestions for hardware? Wireless is nice, but not a requirement. I have a Cisco WAP4410 lying around if needed. My current cable modem is a 4-port switch w/wifi, uplinked to a 10-port switch.
Also, what am I looking at for work in the home? Currently, the cable jack is in the living room, where my home office is. A perfect spot, but the phone jack in the same area is in the kitchen area between the rooms. Not a good place at all (but who uses PoTs anymore?). Having it terminated at a bedroom jack and relying on wireless won't fly either. Anyone know how extensive their installers are?
Regarding phone wiring also. Will they replace the data line with CAT5 or leave it as CAT3 and term at that point? Experience with my prior condo was piss poor wiring inside and that put me on the cable bandwagon. Current condo was built about 20-years ago. I have access to the box outside, can pull a new CAT5 line through, replace keystone and be done....or will they do this during install?
I get a 30-day window on trial of service but believe the $60 install charge still applies. Not a fan of that, having installed own equipment in past, hence wondering what will they actually do. I can just buy my own modem, pull a good lead out (CAT5), and let them do the outside work while I activate my own modem.
TLDR: What modem is good for VDSL2, maybe with GPON, for Centurylink in Las Vegas (89146) area? Switching for better upload as I stream multiple RTMP feeds and use VPN in both directions. Cox is getting more expensive yearly. Also, what does the installer actually do? Any inside wiring?
