I've had the 12 mb DSL from Centurylink for the last 10 years. It always worked fine. Connecting to a site was reasonably fast, transfers were adequate, life was fairly simple.
Last August we made a trivial change to the account that HAD NOTHING TO DO WITH THE DSL. When all was said and done, we'd had THREE different Centurylink accounts, the service to our address had been cut off, and the billing was TOTALLY screwed up, only NOW, at the end of February, finally being corrected.....
Concurrent with all that stupidity, our DSL started being SIGNIFICANTLY slower to connect to almost all sites. Again, once it's connected and TRANSFERRING, it seems ok, but browsing, connecting, general "rummaging around the Internet" is MUCH slower. From what WAS in most cases a 1 - 2 second job of painting a connection page to anywhere from 4 to 6 or 10 seconds or even LONGER.
Called Centurylink, eventually got to SOMEONE that was supposed to support the network, wasted a lot of time doing things I'd already done, and got a big shrug... No clue. His recommendation was, BELIEVE IT OR NOT, to POWER CYCLE THE MODEM AT LEAST ONCE A DAY... Which was, and is, ludicrous.
BUT, it continues... Speed tests don't show HUGE latency - ran one again this morning, from Minneapolis to a server in Chicago, and got 39ms latency, max download 13.46 mb, upload 780 kb.
I'm going to call again, and waste another hour or two, but does anybody in here have any useful (telling me how well YOUR'S works isn't useful) ideas on how best to improve performance OR to get Centurylink to do something to improve it?
