I moved into a new development that has FTTH. The fiber optic cable connects to the ONT on the side of my house. It is powered from the basement with a battery backup. From the ONT a cat 5e cable goes to the CenturyLink provided Actiontec C2000A-D modem/wireless router. I have several questions:
1. Is the "modem" portion of the Actiontec even used, or does it just function as the router?
2. Could I replace the Actiontec with a dual WAN router of my choice? I have a Netgear router that I like and have used for redundant ISP connections.
3. Would another brand router require any special settings to work with CenturyLink fiber, i.e. VLAN tagging, etc?
4. If the Actiontec is somehow required for the fiber connection to work, can I disable the router function (place it in a bridge mode) and place my own router behind it without being double NATed?
Thanks.
