I wanted to post this in case someone else ran into the same issue. Today I asked Centurylink for a new modem and they happily overnighted one to me, a C1000z. Hopefully it is a better modem.
I signed up for Centurylink internet in April of this year and the modem I received was a "Qwest" branded Zyxel pk5000z.
The pk5000z does not seem like stellar hardware but a specific problem was very confusing at first. Certain web sites would return an error, something to the tune of "Object not found .. does not exist on the Rompager Advanced Server". Turns out that is the modem itself. Below is the explanation why. For who knows what reason the modem is returning an incorrect response for a name resolution request, returning its own IP. I tried configuring static DNS using Google's public servers and it fixed the problem for a day then reverted back to being broken again..
